Types of Silicone:
There are many types of possible silicone sealants to use for your various repairs and gasket replacements. The truth of the matter is most all of them will work fine for all applications. Since Permatex is basically the only major name, I'll be explaining their products. I always skip the basic products, and spend the extra money for their Ultra line of Gasket Makers. The ultra line not only lasts longer, holds up better, they also don't have much of an odor.

Ultra Black	Has the highest resistance to oil of any of the silicone sealers permatex offers. Permatex's suggested applications include, valve covers, oil pans, intake manifold end seals, timing covers, transmission pans.
Ultra Blue	My favorite, and a generic multi-purpose sealant. Permatex's suggested applications include, valve covers, oil pans, timing covers, transmission pans, differential covers.
Ultra Copper	Is best for high temperature applications. Permatex's suggested applications include, exhaust manifolds/ headers, valve covers, oil pans, timing covers, water pumps, thermostat housings.
Ultra Grey	Is mean for high torque, high vibration applications. Permatex's suggested applications include, valve covers, oil pans, intake manifold end seals, timing covers, water pumps, thermostat housings.
